Downloaded and listened to the new Marianas Trench album. Never listened to them all that much before. The album is called Masterpiece Theatre. It's 11 tracks, which is an okay length. It takes most of an hour to listen to it.

I dont mind it. It isnt anything to get excited about. The riffs aren't anything special, the lyrics are a bit high for me to be entirely sure of the singers genital state, and really, stop referencing the Beatles. I realize they were a big fucking deal, but just because most of them are dead doesnt mean their discography becomes a free idea bucket. John Lennon is givng you teh finger from Heaven, guys, I promise you.

That said, I find it hard to listen to the album straight through. The earlier songs are mediocre at best, and it's easy to just let it fade into background noise. From about half way trhough to the end, a few good songs perk above the rest, noticably "Celebrity Status" for its quick lyrics and solid beat and "Masterpiece Theatre, Pt 3." for it's fairly finite conclusion to the album.

This isnt ground breaking stuff, and I'll probably forget about it in a few days//weeks, but it was an okay romp.

I also picked up the new single from Alexisonfire, "Young Cardinals."

It sounds pretty much like every other Alexisonfire song I've heard as of late, but that's okay. It starts off very screamy, in fact, it's pretty screamy the entire way through. But it has a comparatively melodic chorus, which I can dig. It's hard to get into the lyrics unless you're finely tuned in the art of screamo, which I'm not, but as an outsider looking in, I can kind of see the appeal. The screamy bits are a bit too gutteral and not angry enough for my Disturbed-loving self, but it's forgiven. Honestly, I think the chorus is the best part of the song. The beat is forgetable, abuses the symbals a bit much, the drums overpower the guitar, so your either listening to thumpthumpthump or you're listening to the lyrics. There is very little inbetween.

Dont go out of your way to get this song, but if you stumble on it, it's okay.

With the new Transformers movie comes a new Transformers album, and back to represent for robot kind, is Linkin Park, with their new single "New Divide."

I'm well aquainted with LP's work, and I find that this single is both samey, and yet, an okay exception. The opening riff to the song is wonderful, absolutely lovely. It is hair raising in its intensity, and I will honestly listen to the first half a minute several times before I proceed with the song just because I love it so much. The lyrics aren't anything special, and Chester's voice isnt anything to write home about, but this song steps away from LP's past angst and seems to be a bit brighter. Some of the lines seem a bit longer than they should be, but that can be forgiven. The melody of the entire song gives me shivers, and is just, in general, very well done. Around 2:40, one of the best guitar solo's I've heard in some time happens, and really, I love it. I wish they had drawn more on that solo during the entire song, but alas. That same solo also happens to punctuate every time I get a text message, taking over from the opening riff of Supermassive Black Hole. I think part of the melodic success of this song draws on the fact that LP worked with Hans Zimmer, one of the composers behind both of the new Batman movie scores. Between Zimmer and LP, New Divide, as well as the entire score for Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen was created.

I heartily recommend picking this single up. It is a very lovely piece, and a bit of revival of the older LP style, mixed with some new, dare I say it, edgey, tones.

Whee! Below the cut are 3490234908234908 icons. Okay. Like, 187. But still. This is barely a fraction of what I have, but these are some of the ones I like more. I'll post more when I de-laze.
